French translation:cheval de saut
Explanation:
Vaulting horse = cheval de saut
Pommel horse = cheval d'arcon

They are different. A pommel horse is like a vaulting horse with the addition of two handles on the top surface. They are used differently also. Vaulting horses are used for jumping over, pommel horses require an exploration of the surface, the gymnast in continual movement.

See this URL for pictures and explanations of both.

Yes there is a difference, but the object is similar.

Explanation:
Saut de cheval ( the name of the object is cheval-sautoir, the word "saut" is the action of jumping).

"Saut de cheval" is when the gymnast run, jump on a springboard and jump over the vaulting horse. Women and men can do this exercise in the Olympics.

The" cheval d'arçon" is an object similar to the vaulting horse, but it has two pommels above it (like two rings) and the gymnast do his exercise by lifting his body with the strength of his arms. Only man can do this exercise in the Olimpics.

vaulting horse

Explanation:

cheval sautoir

Explanation:
YOu may want to have a look at the site below, where there are translations for many different gymnastic terms. From it, I got this translation:

"Cheval sautoir - vaulting horse
Cheval d'arçons - pommel horse "

Here are a few more instances where the term is used:

http://www.commonwealthgames.ca/cgac_f/sport/sports.htm

http://www.microtec.net/gymrich/present.html

http://perso.wanadoo.fr/mikael.levy/gym.htm

To help you make the difference between the two:

Hope this helps.
