You don't have to specify whether you are male of female. Enfant is a perfectly proper word. (in fact, enfant is even proper in this case if you are talking about an adult)

"Je suis seulement un enfant" would have been "I am only a child" in English

Je suis entièrement d'accord avec Dauphine. C'est la seule réponse possible pour décrire une dimension familiale comprenant un seul enfant. On peut, si on veut, spécifier fils/fille etc, mais stricto senso, votre terme se traduit parfaitement par 'enfant unique'.
