This is a rather "polite" insult when the person you 're speaking to is showing himself a bit too demanding and you can't answer his demand or else completely uninterested by what you say. Another way to say it: "go to hell"

As others have suggested, there is a myriad of ways of saying this, including a literal translation (va sauter dans un lac), but va te pendre, as well as being widely used, seems to hit the right register.
