“boat-for-boat” appartient à la voile olympique, la monotypie et la Coupe America, , le match racing, la régate pure donc, mais s’applique de plus en plus à la course océanique, transatlantique (VOR et 60-pides Open mono et la classe ORMA) au fur et à mesure que les règles de classe imposent une uniformité à travers ces flottes.

On parle de courses "bateau contre bateau" et aussi "un contre un", de l'anglais "one on one", one-to one". Les courses se font à armes égales, tout la stratégie s'orientant sur le fait qu'il y ait qu'un seul adversaire.
