Explanation:
You can't really say "ma ville est Birmingham" (the exact translation of My town is B...). It simply doesn't sound French. J'habite B. means i live in the town of Birmingham but depending on what the previous or next sentence is or what you want to say you can replace "j'habite" by almost anything.
