English term or phrase: small by-product molecules(Plastics)
Subject:Plastics-Polymerization

Condensation produces a variety of polymer chain lengths, whereas addition reactions produce only specific lengths. Furthermore, condensation polymerizations produce small by-product molecules such as water, ammonia, and glycol, whereas no by-products are generated in reaction additions.

Je ne sais si je dois employer le terme sous-produit ou derive. Il me semble que "petit sous-produit de molecule" sonne mal.J'apprecierais beaucoup vos suggestions.

produits secondaires de faible poids moleculaire, de bas poids moleculaire
Explanation:
What does not sound right is the literal nature of the translation attempt. "small" should be translated as "de petite taille", as in "sous-produits de petite taille", and more scientifically, "de faible poids moleculaire" as opposed to the molecular weight of larger polymers. Instead of "faible", I have seen "bas" too (low molecular weight).
Depending on the context given by other portions of your document, "derives" or "residus" may be used (i.e. if these terms are not used to spceifically designate something else such as derivatized polymers). However, I believe that the real meaning is that you get a primary product which is the polymer, and some other "stuff" that are secondary products. Therefore "produits secondaires" might be most appropriate.

Good luck,

surtout pas "petit sous produit de molécule"

Explanation:
ce sont en fait "des petites molécules de sous-produits dérivés (eau, ammoniaque et glycol)"
ce sont les molécules qui sont petites pas les sous produits!
hope it'll help
