English term or phrase: "big nosed"
"She walked out of the car all dressed in black looking very cute, big nosed, tired from the trip".
The "big nosed" part is what strikes me in the description of this woman : why would the author suddenly describe her nose ? In the book she's a punkish, very determined Caucasian woman in her 30s. Could it be some sort of familiar idiom to say that she looks pretentious or self-important ? Thank you.

au grand nez/au nez impressionnant

Explanation:
Sorry to be prosaic, but I really think it means what it says, especially as you say that later it is a 'proud nose' - a lovely euphemism for a huge conk if ever I heard one. To vary a little, you could maybe envisage "extraordinaire, prodigieux, formidable"?...
and just for fun, a link to the famous 'tirade du nez' from Cyrano de Bergerac.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hey, I know, I'm torn between the prosaic and the firgurative here. Thanks for your contribution - and for the Cyrano link, it's a great tirade indeed !

disagree  languagerescue: This is not the meaning. It is more like somebody with an attitude, full of herself...

"bêcheuse"

Explanation:
