DEF – A string of large diameter casing, typically 20 inches OD (508 mm), but sometimes larger, extending from the cellar deck in a jack-up drilling rig down into the borehole for about 60 metres. Like the outer conductor in floating rig operations, it forms a secure base for further drilling and for the BOP stack. It is also a guide during the initial stages for the drill string and serves as a return path for drilling fluid and cuttings until other casing strings are run. Source
CONT – The bit is fastened to the string.... The string hangs inside a casing called a conductor pipe. Source
CONT – Drilling is started by attaching a short drill collar and a large bit to the kelly and drilling a hole to about 50 ft. A length of large size casing is run into this and cemented to the formation. This is called the conductor. Source
CONT – To start the well, a welded conductor pipe, anything from 20 to 30-in diameter, is driven about 100 ft in to the sea bed and cut off just below the rotary table. This connects the sea bed with the rig.
