Explanation:
if for example you try to connect to internet, your computer will contact the server by modem. if the server doesn't answer after a certain time, you get an error message. The period between the beginning of the try and the error message is called timeout period. So your error message probably means rejected because the timeout period is over, for example the communication partner waited too long before responding, so the phone stops ringing, or you didn't enter a phone number quickly enough after taking the line, so the phone hangs up again.... Shucks, my modem just hung up because I've had this page open for too long - that's a timeout too.
You can also have a timeout used with programmable logic controllers, for example if an alarm condition occurs, the PLC will wait for a timeout period of a couple of seconds before it shuts down the equipment.
