Ok, let me explain...

Explanation:
...why I said analyse was perhaps too precise:
Before the advent of IT the word "parse" was hardly used except by linguists, and in that context it means of course to break a sentence down into clauses then into phrases then to look at the relationship between the words, phrases and clauses to eventually arrive at a meaning.
Once high-level computing languages came on the scene, an analogous operation was necessary to break code down into variables, operators, functions, flow control instructions, etc. (by means of a mechanism known as a parsing tree). Next came AI, with its need to comprehend natural language, bringing the use of the word "parse" more into line with its original meaning.
As with many other IT terms, however, some person with a lesser grasp of the English language saw the word parse and started to use it in places where there was no real analogy with the original meaning. (This bastardisation of English in IT is rampant and one reason why French IT-speak is a lot cleaner than its English cousin). So now we have "parse" meaning:

1) in XML (extended mark up language), seeking tags in a document to make sure that each opening tag has a corresponding closing tag and that no tag is closed while an inner tag is still open, thereby confirming that a document is "well formed". The parser makes no attempt at all to make any sense of the document - it's a different mechanism that does the *real* parsing. Imagine this a bit like looking through a form to make sure all the boxes have been filled in. It's not till you send the form away that someone actually analyses it. Therefore "logiciel de test de conformance" is the real meaning of parser here.

2) "Parsing" an argument string (soimilar to the suggestion from patrungel concerning the PHP web-page generating language): in a shell script (for example), when an argument string is parsed, all that happens is that everything up to the first whitespace character is assigned to a variable called $0, then evrything up to the next whitespace character is assigned to $1, etc, etc, until the end of the string is reached. Again, once the line is parsed, the parser doesn't attempt to make any sense of it; its the command interpreter that takes over and does this. "algorithme d'affectation" is therefore the real meaning here.

No doubt further badly-informed innovators have used "parse" for even worse purposes. The moral of the story is "never trust an English word that IT people have had their hands on", and this is why I said that more context is needed. "Analyse" might be right, but to be sure we need to know what is actually doing the parsing and what the outcome of that parsing is.
