English term or phrase: to broadcast the bread
Does anyone know if this is an idiomatic expression and how to translate it?
Thanks to all of you out there

German translation:laß dein Brot über das Wasser fahren...
Explanation:
Laß dein Brot über das Wasser fahren, so wirst du es finden nach langer Zeit.
Prediger 11.1

Although I am not as "bibelfest" as sirius, the biblical reference was obvious at first glance.
I do have German bible, and that's the translation.

Explanation:
It's a biblical quotation (Ecclesiasticus):

"Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days (Eccles. xi. 1). When the Nile overflows its banks the weeds perish and the soil is disintegrated. The rice-seed being cast into the water takes root, and is found in due time growing in healthful vigour."

I'm afraid I have no German Bible, so it's up to you to find the "authorised" German version.
