I have difficulties working out the following sentence:
Past his boot tips, dimly, an enormous column- the
straight-trunked iroko from which he hung suspended- sweeping through his field of vision.

I would like to ask if someone could provide an interpretation of it in their own words, in English. 'Iroko' is the name of a certain kind of tree. Thanks in advance for giving it a go!

He/she is looking upwards and your phrase is describing which impression this iroko tree is making on the narrator in this particular situation. The words enormous colums and sweeping through field of vision express the passivity and stress the narrator is in.

Explanation:
An den Spitzen seiner Stiefel vorbei schwang sich verschwommen eine riesige Säule – der aufrechte Stamm des Iroko Baums, an dem er hing – durch seinen Gesichtskreis.

Seems the protagonist ist hanging upside down from a tree and swinging. The scene ist viewed as though the swinging induvidual is stationary and the tree ist moving around him.

Souns a bit like Steinbeck.
