At the schoolyard, kids are shouting and hopping in the morning sun like a hatch of crickets.

German translation:wie ein Schwarm Grillen

While it is correct that a hatch is "Brut", you would not refer to a "Brut Grillen" when trying to convey the idea of a large number. A large number of insects is a "Schwarm", and that word fits much better into your context as it also carries connotations of buzzing and noise.

the rendering of my learned Colleague, i.e. 'Brut von Grillen' is absolutely accurate, the alternative I am offering is perhaps slightly more 'readable' as a literary piece:
Die Kinder lärmen und toben im Schulhof in der Morgensonne wie ein Schwarm frisch ausgeschlüpfter Grillen.
