In teh high smoke case, the injection event lasts a little longer, the heat release is slightly advanced because of the slightly richer mixture and at the tail of the injection event, more fuel is being injected during the main heat release event. This probably causes the sudden increase in smoke. It should be noted that in both cases the injection event ends after top dead center. *Thus with the high smoke case, the piston would have been marginally further than the high smoke case.*
