...das wäre so, als wollte man versuchen, Zahnpasta wieder in die Tube hineinzudrücken...

This is most certainly not a technical"financial term... refers to the adage that one can pull on a string, but one can't push on a string. I can't think of an equivalent German saying (an einem Faden/einer Leine ziehen, aber den Faden/die Leine nicht in irgendetwas hineindrücken sounds very contrived). See if you can work with the above suggestion.

Incidentally, you can help those whom you ask for help by providing some decent context, such as the entire sentence in which the phrase appears.
