This refers to bond issues that do not really exist, the (theoretical)value of which is calculated to quantify certain market parameters. Such notional calculations are commonplace with bond indices (such as the BOX indices of Deutsche Börse, for example). Another example are bond futures contracts which are based on notional bonds that do not really exist either, where the value of a real bond delivered is calculated by way of a conversion factor that expresses the value of the "real" bond in terms of the generic bond issue.
