This is the director's trademark of putting a character in the hole.

in the hole = in a hole? (in die Klemme, Patsche)
It has nothing to do with money or prison.

3. jemandem ein Bein stellen

5. Knüppel zwischen die Beine werfen

7. im Stich lassen
8. in die Suppe spucken
9. die Suppe versalzen
10. den Spass verderben

Die ersten 2-3 treffen es wohl am besten, die anderen sind schwächer.
