Es geht um ein Verkabelungsprojekt, und die ,rung number' bezieht sich offensichtlich auf ein sog. Leiterdiagramm. Kontextbeispiel:
a. Draw a schematic for a basic motor starter, including push button controls and overload protection.
b. Know the symbols for and the principles of operation for normally open and closed relays (with or without time delay), push buttons, and coils.
c. Be able to construct a ladder diagram for a control circuit given the operational requirements for the system.
d. Given a ladder diagram:
Identify components and purpose
Properly label the rung numbers and control functions
Describe the operation of the control circuit
e. Understand and be able to explain the control circuits for reduced voltage starting of AC induction motors
f. Understand and be able to explain reversing controllers for AC motors

Explanation:
Ein "ladder diagramm" ist ein "Stromlaufplan in aufgelöster Darstellung". In solch einem Plan werden die Strompfade oder auch Stromwege nummeriert. Anhand dieser Nummerierung werden dann die in diesem Strompfad liegenden Geräte bezeichnet. Also ein Relais in Strompfad 3 würde mit K3 bezeichnet. Alle Schaltkontakt, die zu diesem Relais gehören erhalten ebenfalls die Bezeichnung K3. So lassen sich in komplexen Schaltplänen, die zugehörigen Schaltelement leichter finden. Explanation:
Ein "ladder diagramm" ist ein "Stromlaufplan in aufgelöster Darstellung". In solch einem Plan werden die Strompfade oder auch Stromwege nummeriert. Anhand dieser Nummerierung werden dann die in diesem Strompfad liegenden Geräte bezeichnet. Also ein Relais in Strompfad 3 würde mit K3 bezeichnet. Alle Schaltkontakt, die zu diesem Relais gehören erhalten ebenfalls die Bezeichnung K3. So lassen sich in komplexen Schaltplänen, die zugehörigen Schaltelement leichter finden.
