English term or phrase: to offer a check

The risk of a radicalist coalition (involving M5S and Lega) is the scenario that poses the most significant credit implications for the Italian sovereign (XXX rates Italy “A-” with a “Stable” Outlook). The election of the presidents of the Senate and lower house – in which the president for the Senate saw a compromise candidate – showed that M5S and Lega are capable of working together, even if significant hurdles still remain to such a pair governing together. Five Star and Lega’s platforms include both areas of similarity and areas of disparity (including critically on who obtains the premiership and whether Forza Italia can participate), though backing for such a joint government has increased among Five Star and Lega voters.

As an alternative, a leftist government scenario, in which PD agrees to support an M5S-government, would be more moderate, with PD’s experience in government ***offering a check on M5S’s more unrealistic, expansionary policy proposals***. Although PD is divided on this possibility and the party has stated its intention to go into opposition, things may change hinging on the results of a PD leadership contest and the official consultations of President Sergio Mattarella with party leaders. A third scenario involving a centre-right coalition government supported by some of PD is also not precluded.

Findet ihr das ok so? Ich bin noch nicht ganz zufrieden damit...
