Mir fehlt wahrscheinlich der angelsächsische Humor...oder sonst irgendetwas. Bei der folgenden "Geschichte" (immerhin aus der Hauszeitung eines der wirklich "globalen Akteure" des Softwaregeschäfts) komme ich einfach nicht hinter den Sinn.

Also -- es war einmal (Namen der handelnden Personen und Konzerne sowie des Orts der Handlung wurden geändert):

"Cousins Reunited!
The Story of the Eggman
It all began at a team dinner in Blackwoods, UK.
In January of 2006 the group decided a curry night would be the best way to relax after a long day of working on 12x.
Along with the European team was Dick Burguignonne and Lucie Dalhuis, US Team Leads.
After a beautiful dinner at Pardis, the local Indian restaurant, the group decided on an ice cream dessert.
What they didn’t notice until their dessert was half gone was that the dish their ice cream was in, was in the shape of an eggman!
Shocked by the resemblance, Chris Left's eyes began to glisten.
The eggman was his long lost cousin!
Many years ago, Chris’ cousin, the eggman, had run away to escape the many jokes and ridicule he endured during his lifetime.
No one in the family knew where the eggman had gone, and due to his short stature he was able to disguise himself as a dessert dish.
It was also his small size that kept him from being able to travel far, and so although he remained in Blackwoods the entire time, he was hidden from everyone he knew.
The eggman’s real name is Eggbert, since he was discovered by his cousin Chris, he has returned to his family.
Although life is still tough as an eggman, he is happy to be among the people who love him.
Eggbert is hoping to make his dreams a reality by becoming a pop star!..."

Im Spiel "Sonic the Hedgehog" von Sega ist Doctor Eggman anscheinend der Bösewicht.

Google kann viel zum Eggman erzählen. Ob alles seinen Ursprung im Computerspiel hat, weiß ich nicht (es gibt auch eine Fernsehserie, ein Lied u.a.)

Du sagst, dein Konzern sei "eines der wirklich "globalen Akteure" des Softwaregeschäfts". Das Personal der Firma könnte deshalb gut mit solchen Computerspiel-Figuren vertraut sein.

(Sicherheitshalber würde ich den Kunden noch fragen, ob diese Auslegung zutrifft).

Es gibt auch eine Eggbert-Computerspielfigur.
Diese "geeks" mit ihren "in jokes"!!!

Geeks mit ihren Jokes - genau das ist es, Victor. Da der Job aber bereits geliefert werden musste, habe ich mich mit einer "Anm. d. Übers." aus der Affäre gezogen, in der von der Unvereinbarkeit angelsächsischer und teutonischer Denkart, vom Kampf der Kulturen (Insel gegen Kontinent), von der Unmöglichkeit der Übersetzung von Wortspielen (eggman und Eggbert) usw. die Rede war. Außerdem habe ich herausgefunden, dass die Herausgeberin dieser 1. Ausgabe frisch von einer amerikanischen Universität nach England gekommen und neu ins Unternehmen eingestiegen ist, und dass ihre gesamte herausgeberische Qualifikation in einer Journalism Class in der High School und in ihrer Vorliebe dazu besteht, "etwas Kreatives zu tun...". Da habe ich gleich viel weniger Respekt. Trotzdem danke für Deine umfangreichen Hinweise wie auch für die Bemühungen von Birgit und Nicole, aus mir ein Egghead zu machen. Es hätt aber nix genutzt...

Explanation:
Sounds like a perfectly normal story for a group of Englishmen in their local curry house. Specially if it's a work-related 'do'...
The Beatles too had a very catchy song, "I am the egg man". Wasn't a huge hit though...
Maybe you can do something with "Eierkopf", you might have to get creative on the description of the desert dish.
Unfortunately Humpty Dumpty is quite unknown in Germany, however popular enough to sell salt&pepper shakers in online shops (see google.de).

Nun ja, Eierköpfe werden ja auch verspottet, also reißen sie von zu Hause aus... Humpty Dumpty ist in Deutschland aber doch sehr unbekannt, oder? Naja, die Story wird dem deutschen Leser sowieso keine Lachtränen in die Augen treiben...

Asker: Danke, Birgit. An den Eierkopf habe ich zuallererst gedacht und ihn wieder verworfen (warum sollte der von zu Hause ausreißen). Detto Humpty Dumpty. Ich dachte, es gäbe da andere Hintergründe, die mir vielleicht nicht bekannt sind.

Ich glaube es geht hier um den iMac und das eiförmige Design. "Eggman" könnte der Insider-Spitzname sein.

"At the time, Apple was unique in producing all-in-one desktop computers, in which the CPU and the monitor are contained in one enclosure. Many other PC manufacturers have tried to imitate this, most of which have met with little success.

Aesthetically, the iMac was dramatically different from any other mainstream computer ever released. It was made of translucent “Bondi blue”-colored plastic, and was egg-shaped around a 15-inch (38 cm) CRT."
