Ich stimme Sibsab übrigens zu, dass "abspalten" der etwas wissenschaftlichere Ausdruck wäre. Ich gehe halt vom englischen "cut off" aus, das eher bildhaft ist, und versuche eine ähnlich bildhafte Übersetzung zu liefern...;-)
