English term or phrase: lung excursion
From a text regarding the effect of vocal trainng on young children: They ( children) use greater lung excursion and take more frequent breaths. A google search did bring up lots of sites, offering tons of info on all kinds of "excursions", but they really fit my context. All suggestions appreciated!

Explanation:
Let me add to that: acc. to Bunjes, Exkursion describes die Beweglichkeit des Zwerchfells. That would fit in with your context of vocal training.

Lungenexkursion, Atemexkursion

Explanation:
I found Atemexkursion under "excursion", subentry breathing excursion, in Bunjes.
Excursion = Exkursion (or Excursion) was also supported by Eihchhorst, Medical Dictionary.

A Google search netted one hit on Lungenexkursion:
home.t-online.de/home/strick-stube/zahnb.htm
and quite a number on Atemexkursion, I picked only a few:
dochost.rz.hu-berlin.de/dissertationen/medizin/aikele-peter/HTML/aikele-ch3.html
www.uni-duesseldorf.de/WWW/AWMF/ll/chvpc014.htm
www.uni-duesseldorf.de/WWW/AWMF/ll/chtho009.htm

HTH! :-)
