English term or phrase: irritable bowel syndrome
What's the standard German term in usage for "irritable bowel syndrome" (is it something like Reizdarm?), also in this connection, what does GERD stand for as a related medical condition?

GERD = gastroesophageal reflux disease = gastroösophagealer Reflex
Explanation:

The return of stomach contents back up into the oesophagus This frequently causes heartburn because of irritation of the oesophagus by stomach acid. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to scarring and stricture of the oesophagus, requiring stretching (dilating) of the oesophagus. 10% of patients with GERD develop Barrett's oesophagus which increases the risk of cancer of the oesophagus. 80% of patients with GERD also have a hiatal hernia.

irritable bowel syndrome = mucous colitis, Reizdarmsyndrom

Explanation:

Claudia

see below

Explanation:
Reuter & Reuter Med. Wörterbuch just confirms what Claudia wrote and adds a few more names in English and in German: * Deutsch = Reizkolon = irritables/spastisches Kolon = Kolonneurose = Colon irritable/spasticum * Englisch = irritable bowel syndrome = irritable bowel = irritable colon = irritable colon syndrome * GER is listed as gastroesophageal reflux = gastroösophagealer Reflux = GER (in German too). * Whether this could be classified as a "related" term, I do not know. * I also found nothing for the "D".

Noch ein Link

Explanation:

Claudia

Reizdarmsyndrom = irritable bowel syndrome

Explanation:
In German, this is also known as: irritables Kolon, Syndrom des irritablen Kolons, Colon irritable, spast. Kolon, spast. Kolitis, Kolonneurose, unstabiles Kolon, Colica mucosa
Lexikon der Medizin, (Ullstein Medical) ... I believe the explanation of GERD is correct. American advertisements refer to it as "heartburn" or "acid reflux disease".

Reizkolon-Syndrom (colitis mucosa; colon irritabile)

Explanation:
I realize that you have already accepted an adequate explanation for the above.
However, I would recommend that you purchase two reference books;
they are; The Merck Manual (English) and MSC Manual (Germab). You will then be in a position to cross reference terms like the one in question.
Let me know how you are doing.
PS
Neither one of these books is very costly to acquire and they contain a wealth of information.
