Membrane sweep
This is offered to all women at the time of their due dates. Sweeping membranes can be carried out in your GP’s surgery by a trained doctor or midwife. He or she introduces a gloved finger into the cervix to “sweep” or tease the membranes away from the inner edge of the cervix. There is occasional discomfort during the procedure, but no increased risk of infection or bleeding. The aim of the procedure is to bring forward the onset of labour, and it is very effective. It also reduces the likelihood that you will need other methods of induction.
