thanks, dierk & JE-Access & mvzanten and sorry for confusing you with the story about the military aircraft crash. It confused me to hear that word again in a different context.

Back to my question, here is more context:

quote If a nuclear missile were fired at America today from Russia or China, Korea or Iraq, the relay station at Pine Gap would help give the US about 30 minutes warning before the warheads landed on their target. ... Details are not settled, but the NMD plan is that after the attack information arrives at Colorado, it would be fed to five ultra-high frequency radars in the US, UK and Greenland, used to predict the FLIGHT
ENVELOPE of the hostile missile. unquote

I should have advised you that this is not a technical report. Worked in the airline industry for more than 20 years, incl. load control. I'm writing for a German Newspaper published in Australia. The readers can't or don't want to read English. I went through the web and came to the conclusion that 'flight envelope' is not a well-known German word. It's not a professional term in civil aviation either.

I can't help thinking that an envelope tells me about origin and destination, the weight, the size, but that I'm not sure about the contents.

Now I'm really bamboozled. How about:
detailierte Auswirkungen?
Thank you all, Uschi

Explanation:
Uschi,
Now that you quoted the context, I think that my translation (with modest addition) still fits great. Let me explain:
The five ultra-high frequency radars are fed attack information which consists of speed and altitude information of the missile. The computers hooked up to the radar use those data and calculate the flight envelope of the missile which consists of take-off speed, stalling speed, ceiling with corresponding speed, maximum level speed, maximum speed at altitude, and maximum sea level speed. Using these calculated data, the computers can then predict the target of the missile which is the goal of a Frühwarnsystem like the one described.

Cheerio,
Dierk

Flugenveloppe

Explanation:
Flugenveloppe, Flugbereich, V-n Diagramm

Es scheint, dass dieser Begriff zum Teil verdeutscht wurde: Flugenveloppe

1. Definition - Flight envelope:

The laws of physics limit what an aircraft can and cannot do once airborne. These limits are determined by the design of the aircraft and its powerplant (engine). Other factors (like the weight of the aircraft)also define the flight envelope. Aircraft can exceed their envelope; however, some consequence (ranging from minor to severe) will occur

(Flug) Höhen- (Flug) Geschwindigkeitsverhältnisse

Explanation:
Flight envelope = Flugbereich = Höhen- Machzahleigenschaften oder Flugeigenschaften oder Höhen- Machzahlverhältnisse oder Höhen- Geschwindigkeitsverhältnisse

I concocted the above out of Dierk's good references together with:

"Flight envelope" = "Flugbereich" from Langenscheidt-Routledge

This would also make sense with your story about the AF pilot because if the pilot (in the case of an aircraft) or the guidance system (in the case of a ballistic missile) allows or tries to fly the aircraft or missile outside the envelope, the thing will crash or stall, etc. Particularly for the incoming missile, knowing the speed at one altitude allows the intercept computers to predict the speed at other altitudes and thereby to know where the enemy missile will be at any given intercept time in the future.

In your context, for non-technical readers, because "Flugbereich" wouldn't make much sense to most people, I would just use (Flug) Höhen- (Flug) Geschwindigkeitsverhältnisse.
