English term or phrase:to be on the bubble
in reference to sports, a team or individual that is in the final qualifying position but could be replaced by a lower-ranked team or individual is considered to be "on the bubble" - how would you say this in German?
The text is a sports reporting script that will be doubled.
It is about the NZ Jetsprint Championship (2007, I suppose), round 1 of the superboats class/division. I think they are in the middle of the elimination process (6 elimination rounds).
The relevant passage goes as follows:
"Time to beat now is still the time of Dave Hopkins the 50.77, after that we will be starting to cut them down. We are looking for the next 4, then we will be looking for the final 2 and then it will be just 1 that will pick up the maximum points here in the New Zealand Championship and that is 30. 30 on offer for Round 1, 30 on offer right through the 6 rounds for the top runners.
Dave Hopkins is ON THE BUBBLE, he will be the first to go back on the trailer. 50.77 the time to beat, and you would have to think that Gary Tomes will do it easily. He does and he runs a 48.72 so Gary Tomes goes quicker as well, the fastest so far is Peter Briant but one man to go and this is Bryan Smith."
I just delivered the text, but I want to learn for future occasions, so further suggestions would be highly welcome.
