Tech/Engineering / metal fabrication
English term or phrase: air melting
Using air and vacuum melting, vacuum arc and electroslag remelting, powder metallurgy, forging, extrusion, hot and cold rolling, and cold drawing, it makes a comprehensive range of nickel alloys in most standard wrought forms.

And here the explanation from the client:
Previously, deformation-processed alloys have been prepared by expensive techniques such as vacuum induction melting. An air melting technique has been developed to prepare alloys using a modified standard tilt pour induction melting furnace. The technique avoids oxidation of the chromium by the use of a blanket of argon gas and forced submersion of the chromium in the copper melt. Strength/conductivity properties are equivalent to the vacuum-induction-melted alloys.

Now I just need the German, and I'll be a happy camper. :-) I did find a bunch of English-language sites mentioning this, even a couple of glossaries, but was unable to come up with a German equivalent.

Yes, that does seem to fit. I searched for Luftschmelzen (among other possibilities), and came up empty-handed. Now I tried it with just Luftschmelz, and I got the same hit that you did.

Thanks,
Kristina
