English term or phrase: viewing path
In the field of microscopy (the overall context is laser surgery):
"The filter must be in the viewing path to enable laser activation."
or
"A microscope with multiple independent viewing paths, such as the Leica M841, …"

A search on Leica M841 (which, BTW, is a surgical microsope) didn't bring up anything conclusive with respect to viewing path. I did find viewing beam, but I'm not entirely certain if viewing beam and viewing path are equivalent (although one website seems to suggest that they might be).

Any ideas gratefully appreciated. TIA.

Strahlengang
Explanation:
This is the correct word for the way that light takes through a telescope or microscope.
It would make perfect sense for a medical microscope that a laser can only be activated if the appropriate filter is inserted between the surgeon's eye and the place where the laser burns away.

I agree - further searches on "Mikroskop +Strahlengang", "Beobachtungsstrahlengang" and "Beleuchtungsstrahlengang" made it clear that this is indeed the correct term. (And also showed that the English terms viewing beam and viewing path are used to describe the same thing.) Thank you.
