English term or phrase: strings
For use in IT/software user manual.

Does anybody happen to know what "strings" means in this context? (i.e. "message string", "generic string")

Many thanks for your suggestions!

Zeichenfolge, Zeichenkette

Explanation:
Bei einem Werk, das sich an Programmierer richtet, würde ich den Begriff "string" einführen, also einmal string (Zeichenkette) schreiben, denn Programmierer kennen den Begriff "string" allgemein. Bei einem Buch, das sich an Laien wendet (oder Neulinge im Internet etc.) würde ich Zeichenkette schreiben. Bei message string reicht wohl einfach "Nachricht".

String can be translated as "String" in German

Explanation:
A string is always a couple of letters and/or numbers. It can be a command, comment or a macro (containing multiple commands).
In German:
Software-Strings sind gemischte Buchstaben/Zahlen-Sätze, die ein Befehl oder eine Kommentar enthalten können. Das Wort String kann im Deutschen roblemlos übernommen werden.

Zeichenfolge

Explanation:
In the context of programming languages String can be translated as String, because it usually is a keyword of the programming language. When abstracting from this keyword property, the data type is referred to as Zeichenkette.
Generally in software, most Windows help systems/documentations always use Zeichenfolge, whereas Unix and Linux-based systems tend to use the english word String.
