English term or phrase: docking capstan
Here is another nautical term which I'd like to clarify.

I am fairly sure that "capstan" means "Windentrommel" or "Spillkopf", but what is the difference between a simple "capstan" and a "docking capstan"?

Your help would be appreciated.
Claudia
Gangspill, Spill
Explanation:
Capstan : a cylindrical barrel fitted in larger ships for heavy lifting work, particularly when working anchors and cables. In smaller ships, the function of a caapstan is taken over by a windlass. The difference between a capstan and a windlass ?
On a capstan, spindle on which the barrel is mounted is vertical.
On a windlass, the spindle on which the drums and gypsies are mounted is horizontal.

Adding "docking" changes nothing. A capstan/windlass is commonly used for hauling in the anchor rode, docking and so on.

capstan = Gangspill, Spill

capstan barrel, capstan drum = Spilltrommel, Spillkörper

capstan spindle = Spillachse, Spillspindel

windlass = Ankerwinde

anchor capstan, anchor windlass = Ankerspill, Ankerwinde

anschließende Ankerwinde

Explanation:
docking bedutet u.a. 'andocken' d.h. anschliessen
Vielleicht meint man einfach daß die Winde sich im direkten Anschluß befindet

for anchor/ for mooring

Explanation:
Technically there is no difference at all. The difference is in the application.
