English term or phrase:pull the plug on
To let someone or something die. Put an end to something. Graphic way of saying 'end/ kill'.
Usage of “pull the plug” :-Για να αφήσει κάποιον ή κάτι πεθαίνουν/ Βάλτε ένα τέλος σε κάτι. This is a far too wordy/tame equivalent for such a powerful idiom
--Management decided to pull the plug on the project.
--Jane pulled the plug on the whole project.
--The treasurer pulled the plug because there was no more money in the budget.
The doctor recommends we pull the plug i.e. turn off the life-support machine.
--He is brain-dead and there is no hope of recovery.
Origin: This expression refers to removing a plug to make something stop working - when you pull the plug out of the wall, your appliance doesn't work. In the 19th century, when this term originated, the plug was for a toilet. To flush the toilet, you had to pull out a plug.
Thanks Anastasia for your question. I was puzzled because the idiom in Greek seems to mean that 'putting down the switch' is to turn it off, whereas in English putting down a switch is to turn it on, unless it is a dimmer when turning it down is to dim a light. You have elucidated the matter. Thanks for your discussion entry.
1. I can't follow you when you say "What puzzles me still is that 'to put down the switch' in English is to turn it ON."
2. The expression about the river is "κατεβάζει νερά" and it means "φουσκώνει". Why? Because there is too much water.
This is almost an exact match for the English 'pull the plug on' in the sense of 'turn the life support machine off' - Nick's bizarre grave (!) humour was brilliant! What puzzles me still is that 'to put down the switch' in English is to turn it ON. Added to this is my confusion that of a river κατεβάζω means to rise. I need elucidation.

All helpful comments, thank you. This translation seems as literal as the English and also covers every context. Thanks as ever.
