Στο πρώτο στάδιο παρατηρείται μία αύξηση στον βαθμό απώλειας των μαλλιών ενώ στην συνέχεια μειώνεται η διάμετρος των τριχών όπως και ο αριθμός τους. Στις γυναίκες το πλάτος της χωρίστρας μεγαλώνει ενώ παρατηρείται μία αραίωση των μαλλιών που ξεκινάει από το σημείο πάνω από τους κροτάφους και φτάνει μέχρι την κορυφή του κεφαλιού. Οι παραπάνω αλλαγές γίνονται πλέον εμφανείς γύρω στην ηλικία των 30 χρόνων.

In the initial phase, an increase in the rate of hair shedding is observed, followed by a decrease in fiber diameter and number of hairs in the affected area. In females this leads to wider parting and a diffuse thinning from just behind the frontal hairline to the crown. For most individuals changes become evident during the mid- to late 20's.
