English term or phrase: out the back
My grandfather used to say, "Yep...I went through school..." (a somewhat overly melodramatic pause)"...in the front door and out the back."

Saya terjemahkan begini:

Kakek saya dulu bilang, “Yap...Kakek melewati sekolah...”

cuma numpang lewat, masuk pintu depan keluar pintu belakang
Explanation:
My take on this is that the Grandfather spent time in school but didn't learn anything, or didn't retain what he learnt.

Somewhat akin to "in the left ear and out the right ear"/"masuk kuping kiri keluar kuping kanan" as applied to advice that just went through, heard but not remembered.

My attempt would be:

"Ya, kakek dulu juga sekolah..." "... tapi cuma numpang lewat, masuk pintu depan keluar pintu belakang"

I deliberately used \"sekolah\" rather than \"masuk sekolah\" to avoid giving impression that I\'m talking about physically entering a school building, but rather about schooling.

keluar melalui pintu belakang

Explanation:
There is a play on words here derived from two possible meanings of "went through school":
(1) "received (my) education at school";
(2) "(physically) passed through the school building - going in by the front door and out by the back door",
the latter most accurately reflecting the extent of sang Kakek's experience. This can probably only be translated directly into Indonesian if there is another way of saying "bersekolah".

keluar dari belekang / kabur / pergi diam diam

Explanation:
went to school
1. pergi ke sekolah
2. bersekolah/jalani pendidikan

out the back

Seperti kakek saya yang suka cerita "I went to school on my way to work."
