È il racconto di un incidente d'auto (scampato) su un blog.

...when I was driving home from work, the car started to accelerate by itself, then it stayed put and fluctuated between 3500-5000 rpm.
If I had not declutched, the car would have driven away by itself, and if the brakes had not worked then at worst the car may have run into something.

Ora, il mio dizionario dà "declutch" = disinnestare (lasciare) la frizione e "stay put" = rimanere immobile/ferma

Però non mi torna: ho l'impressione che declutch voglia dire "scalare" e stay put "rimanere piantata" (cioè, l'auto arriva a 3500-5000 giri e rimane a quei regimi). In sostanza, immagino che la scena sia andata così: l'auto accelera da sola, rimane e 3500-5000 giri, ma il conducente ha la prontezza di scalare e frenare, evitando l'incidente. Potrebbe essere o ho capito male?
Tenete presente che l'autore del commento non sembra essere inglese madrelingua, quindi potrebbe aver usato due termini sbagliati...
