Anche se letteralmente charities significa organizzazioni benefiche, in realtà almeno negli USA (realtà che conosco e dove ho lavorato in organizzazioni non-for-profit) il termine si usa per riferirsi a tutte le organizzazioni non-for-profit, culturali, religios, educative ecc. che godono di deterinati privilegi fiscali (esonero dal pagamento delle imposte sul reddito per esempio) e che fanno parte di un registro apposito.
