Well, io ho trovato "Thompsonianism" tradotto come Thompsonianismo, cioè un sistema empirico di cura mediante preparati vegetali. con l'Omeopatia ci sta bene, ma non so se è con la "p".

La frase l'ho interpretrata più in maniera contrastiva, perchè la frase rif. è un una concessiva:
...si arrogassero il diritto di definire il termine salute e malattia".

non ho trovato alcun equivalente per Thomsonianism, ma essendo che thomson ha introdotto l\'igiene naturale, si puo\' parlare di igienismo di Thomson..

Sebbene la medicina scientifica.... si assumesse il potere di definire i concetti di salute e malattia.

Thomson appoggiava le terapie con erbe naturali e radici secondo esperienza riportata da marinai che battevano le vie dell'estremo oriente. L'omeopatia invece, tratta le malattie con dosi piccole di rimedi che, se usati in dosi piu vaste, possono causare di per se stessi i sintomi della stessa malattia.

Io qui prenderei in considerazione una forma nel senso di "si fosse andata arrogando il potere di".
Forse, una forma più snella potrebbe derivare da una parafrasi libera:

"fosse oramai pienamente in grado di definire ciò che costituisse "salute" e "malattia"
