it would be useful to know what future vision the Board has for the newly merged company - for instance, XY have been on the acquisition trail for some time - is this to continue? Perhaps it's a little early in the day to ask about future strategy, but it would be useful to hear your thoughts.

Dovrei saperne di piu' per essere sicura al 100 %.
Assumo che il testo descrive una situazione dove c'e' stata la fusione fra due ditte.
Ora, una ditta (o forse un dipartimento)
si comporta (follows the trail) come se la ditta fosse stata comprata da loro.

Nella fusione le decisioni sono prese di comune accordo (fra le due organizzazioni che si fondono) mentre nell'acquisto e' la ditta "che compra" a dettare le regole.

Se la mia "palla di vetro" (perche' sto cercando di indovinare parte del testo) non mi mente ti auguro BUONA FORTUNA. Sembra essere un assunto molto delicato.
