English term or phrase: have a momentum on their own
The moment when two people decide to become a couple, whether by living together or getting married is a significant time as it now becomes more difficult to move out of the relationship. Again, the picture of two people in love is too simple. Any fear or ambivalence is covered up and events may even have a momentum of their own, so the two people are not fully in control.
