He was in a daze for a second, and heard himself answering like an echo, without faltering and almost independently if himself, knowing that the answer was going to change the whole of his life, dreading it yet welcoming it at the same time.

Peraltro concordo con Fiorsam su "il dado è tratto" - una decisione che una volta presa (forse un po' con la spinta del "caso") cambierà irrimediabilmente il corso degli eventi.
