Petrarch then began to follow his real love: a passion for books,
poetry, history and a fascination with all things Roman, interests that
had first arisen in his early adolescence. By accepting an honorary position
within the Church and living simply, Petrarch was able to give time
to these private concerns. His project was extraordinary in its scope: he
would attempt to re-imagine the classical world. ‘My mind,’ he wrote in
a letter to posterity, ‘is characterized by a certain versatility and readiness
rather than strength’.48 He was an enthuser, an initiator, but because he
combined a poet’s imagination with a scholar’s concern for accuracy – a
well-balanced intellect, as he himself put it – his work could readily be
