Il "gauntlet" (USA = "gantlet"), è la "pena delle verghe" o "pena delle bacchette", un'antica punizione pubblica medievale, con la quale i vincitori di una battaglia facevano passare i vinti tra due file di persone, che li percuotevano con le mani (spesso con guanti di ferro, significato originario del termine inglese) oppure con delle verghe.

Metaforicamente, questa espressione definisce una gogna, derisione o umiliazione pubblica e, appunto si può tradurre anche con "forche caudine". Sarebbe però preferibile conoscere l'intero contesto del brano per poter dare suggerimenti più precisi.
