anch'io, dall'inizio, presumo che "nine" indichi i 90° della bussola ... non è di grande aiuto per la scelta della traduzione (to run up evoca comunque ordini tramite bandiere, quindi un codice diverso da quello che usiamo comunemente)

sono certo per due motivi.
il primo è che il testo stesso lo dice. conoscendo la fonte (ufficiale che ha prestato servizio nella marina degli stati uniti), dubito che se lo sia inventato.
la seconda è che un altro ufficiale della marina degli stati uniti (edward peary stafford) nel libro "subchaser" dice "It took just about the expected minute for the signal flags to go up on the leading YMS, 'Turn Nine,' and as one the three warships swung ninety degrees to STARBOARD" (mi spiace che dica "starboard" e non "right"), ma cito letteralmente.
la traduzione dovrebbe essere quindi, in questi casi, "ore 3" (non ore 9)
francamente non vedo dove sia il problema.

Il testo originale è la trascrizione di un discorso dove l'argomento principale non è la navigazione. Il testo inoltre risale a oltre 50 anni fa. E' possibile che sia leggermente impreciso essendo spoken English e date le circostanze. Ovvero, è possibile che l'affermazione secondo cui "turn nine" indica una virata A DESTRA possa essere non vera (anche se ho citato un'altra fonte per cui questo parrebbe essere il significato). Per certo è che "turn nine" indica virata a 90°. Quanto a dx o sx, il contesto dovrebbe illuminare. Nel mio caso specifico, si dice esplicitamente "to the right", pertanto il problema non si pone.

Grazie Gian per la dovizia di indicazioni. Ho usato babordo/tribordo solamente per intenderci. Il testo originale infatti dice "right".
Sul fatto che "turn nine" indichi novanta gradi, oltre al testo stesso che ho citato, è possibile trovare il riferimento in rete. L'ipotesi di "nine" come abbreviazione di "ninety" è una mia semplice supposizione e non incide sul significato di "turn nine = turn ninety degrees".

Nel 1913 sono stati abbandonati i comandi "starboard" (tribordo)e "port" (babordo) dal governo USA

ORDERS GOVERNING THE MOVEMENTS OF THE RUDDER.
1. On and after July 1, 1913, the present designations "starboard" and "port" governing movements of a ship's helm are hereby ordered discontinued in orders or directions to the steersman, and the terms "right" and "left", referring to movement of the ship's head, shall thereafter be used instead.
2. The orders as to rudder angle shall be given in such terms as "Ten degrees rudder; half-rudder; standard rudder; full rudder;" etc., so that a complete order would be "Right--Half-rudder," etc.
3. Commanders in chief and commanding officers acting independently may, in their discretion, institute the above changes at an earlier date.

HOW IS YOUR RUDDER? is a question to the helmsman .The helmsman should reply, “5 (10, 15, etc.) DEGREES RIGHT (LEFT), SIR” or “FULL (STANDARD) RIGHT (LEFT) RUDDER, SIR.”
HOW DOES SHE HEAD? or MARK YOUR HEAD? is a question to the helmsman. The helmsman should give the ship's head at the time, for example, “TWO SEVEN FIVE, SIR.”
KEEP HER SO means to continue to steer the course you are heading. This order is usually given after you state the course you are steering.
VERY WELL is a reply of the conning officer to the helmsman, meaning that the situation is understood. You must repeat distinctly, word for word, every order you receive so the officer of the deck or pilot may know that you understood correctly. Also report when you have carried out an order; for instance, report immediately when the rudder is right full or the ship is steady on 257 degrees. Also, when you are making a swing, report occasionally the compass heading that the lubber's line is passing so the conning officer can tell how far the ship has gone through the swing.

EASE YOUR RUDDER means to reduce the rudder angle. It may be given as “EASE TO 15 DEGREES (10 DEGREES, 20 DEGREES) RUDDER.”
RUDDER AMIDSHIPS means to put the rudder on the centerline; no rudder angle. As a rule, this order is merely, “MIDSHIPS!”
MEET HER means to check but not stop the swing by putting on opposite rudder. This order may he given when the ship is nearing the desired course. STEADY means to steady the ship on the course it is heading at the time the order is given. If the ship is swinging at the time, the heading must he noted and the lubber's line brought back to and steadied on it as soon as possible. The order is also stated “STEADY AS YOU GO,” and “STEADY AS SHE GOES.”
SHIFT YOUR RUDDER commands you to change to the same number of degrees of opposite rudder angle. In other words, if your rudder angle is 15 degrees right and the order is given, you change to 15 degrees left rudder.
MIND YOUR HELM! is a warning that the ship is swinging off the course because of bad steering.
NOTHING TO THE RIGHT (LEFT) is given when the presence of some danger on one side or the other makes it necessary to avoid a set in that direction.

COME RIGHT (LEFT) TO 148 means to swing the ship's head in the direction stated and steady it on the course given; in this example, 148 degrees.
STEER 190 is the order usually given for only a minor change of heading to the number of degrees specified.
STEADY ON 225 states the course on which the ship's head is to be steadied. It normally is given while swinging.

capisco. d'altro canto, sia la citazione originale (che dice esplicitamente che il significato è "90-degree to the right" (cioè a destra), sia il fatto che "turn ninety" si trova sia con "port" che con "starboard", deduco che:
1. turn nine/turn ninety indichi semplicemente una svolta di 90° (non per forza a destra, come dice nella riga citata, un'imprecisione ammissibile nel contesto)
2. nel caso particolare della riga citata, dove dice chiaramente che intende a destra, si può dire direttamente "a ore tre".
diversamente saremmo costretti a tradurla con un "'vai per ore nove' significa virare 90° a destra", il che sarebbe un controsenso.

Indipendentemente dalla segnalazione tramite bandiere o radio, nine mi sembra strano che indichi 90.
Quindi io ho pensato a "ore nove" che sarebbe 90° a babordo (sinistra)

Babordo: la parte sinistra della nave (guardando verso prua), opposto di tribordo; il termine è venuto dal francese.

E' vero anche che è possibile effettuare la manovra "turn nine" a babordo (come si evince cercando ["turn nine" port] su Google.
A questo punto direi che in italiano sarà necessario decidere in base al contesto se mettere "vai per ore NOVE" o "vai per ore TRE".

Cercando altri riferimenti, ho trovato a pagina 32 del romanzo "Subchaser" di tal Edward Stafford, reperibile su Google Books, queste parole testuali: "It took just about the expected minute for the signal flags to go up on the leading YMS, 'Turn Nine,' and as one the three warships swung ninety degrees to STARBOARD" (mia enfasi), quindi a dritta. In tal caso si dorebbe dire "vai per ore TRE". In effetti, il "nine" in inglese, sembra stare per "nine[ty]". Una simile abbreviazione avrebbe senso soprattutto se il segnale viene dato con le bandiere (si risparmierebbero un paio di sventolate!)
Sono curioso di sapere che ne pensa Gian, se desidera rispondere.

dopo aver dato l'agree ho visualizzato che ore nove è a sinistra. Mi è venuto il dubbio che "turn nine si riferisca a qualcos'altro, anche perché il verbo "turn uP" può significare alzare a riva un segnale, quindi quando la nave issa il segnale "turn nine", significa che vira di 90° a dritta. Non saprei proprio, passo A

Per rispondere alle domande: il codice è della marina militare statunitense anni 40 e 50. Non so se da allora a oggi è cambiato (dubito). Il fatto che per comunicare il messaggio "turn nine" si usassero bandiere è in effetti secondario (ammetto di non aver indicato chiaramente la cosa). Oggi magari si scambiano il messaggio con i computer e il tutto viene visualizzato a schermo!! :D
Non ho altro contesto oltre a quello fornito.
Quanto al dubbio sinistra/destra... credo non sussista poiché "nine" indica (a mio parere) chiaramente una svolta a sinistra, anche alla luce di quanto detto da Gian che colgo l'occasione di ringraziare!
