Tech/Engineering / scanners
English term or phrase: Blu-Tack
When scanning a 3D object, you’ll sometimes want it completely flat, for technical-style illustrative photography, but if you’re planning to incorporate it into a scene it’ll look more natural at an angle. This means you’ll need to find something suitable to raise part of it up off the glass. (It’s possible to prop your scanner upside-down and place objects underneath, but we can’t recommend this, as it could cause quite serious technical faults.) Plastic blister packs from toys, lightbulbs and so on are good, because they’ll be largely invisible in the scan except for a few highlights – but check that no part of your object is distorted by refraction. Pins can be stuck into most objects easily and without significant damage, and their round heads shouldn’t scratch the scanner glass if you’re careful. Blu-Tack can also be useful, strategically placed for minimum visibility.
