English term or phrase:grind to a dead halt
Then, one night, she grinds to a dead halt. To recover from this illness, she travels to North Africa where she has a brush with terrorism ― not that she cares about politics.
I understand "grind to a halt" means "some activity stops working," but then how does this phrase have meaning here? This seems to be a kind of illness, so does she get paralyzed? Then how can she travel to Africa?
