English term or phrase: if this should seem too good to be true, then it probably is
A saying, a friend of mine would like to put on a birthday card his friend's favourite saying. We were wondering if there was any official proverb or whatever for it, and if not, how best could we put it as both our knowledges of Latin are quite obsolete and forgotten.

Thank you very much.

Si aliquid optimum sed minime verum videtur, ergo probabile fictum est
Explanation:
Hi Corinne,

Of course Latin has not all these English peculiarities and it needed some reconstruction. Hope this is OK for your needs:

Si aliquid optimum: If something (looks) too good

sed minime verum videtur: but doesn't look real/true at all

ergo probabile fictum est: then it probably is false/unreal

Hope it helped,

Thank you very much Flavio,

I remember some latin from school but sadly I could only do 3 years of this language and this was a good few years ago (this is making me sound like an ancient person!).

So I most appreciate your explanation.

Many a thank again and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.
