early modern English Explanation: If you're looking for 1500-1600: it's not Old English, that's much earlier. What you're looking for is actually Early Modern English (Shakespeare's English) See for instance Albert C. Baugh and Thomas Cable "A History of the English Language", 4th ed. London 1993 (Routledge). Chapter 7 (Renaissance English: 1500-1650) is exactly your period and gives a bibliography, One of the most recent works it quotes is Gorlach's "Introduction to Early Modern English" (Cambridge 1991). I haven't read Gorlach myself though. Hope this will steer you in the right direction |
