English term or phrase: tawas
An ingredient in a skin product.

"...contains liquified tawas that whitens the skin."

tawas
Explanation:
'tawas' is a Malay word. And it also means 'garam galian berwarna putih'. You can also use 'alum' but it is better to maintain the original word-co'z it is purely Malay word.

Yes, you're right. I've never heard of the word tawas and didn't realise that it is actually a Malay word so I only checked the English dictionary but of course it wasn't there. And as you suggested, since "alum" is bilingual but "tawas" is purely Malay, the latter is a better choice.

I will inform my client that they should be using "alum" in the English text instead of "tawas".

Thanks again.

alum

Explanation:
This is a straightforward translation, Ramona. Alum is the white- colored mineral (potash alum / potassium alum) used in medicine, in dyeing and tanning, etc.
