Maximum number of peaks that can be fitted into chromatographic given approximately by:

Assuming that component peaks of complex mixtures distribute randomly along elution axes and statistically solve for probability of peak overlap find that number of resolved peaks is at most 37% of peak capacity.

Many of these peaks may have more than one component - number of single identifiable components only a small fraction of calculated peak capacity. Therefore, for complex mixtures need a very large peak capacity - easiest to obtain with multidimensional techniques which combine distinctly different separation mechanisms for each component dimension - gives approximately multiplicative peak capacity - coupling two similar columns in series gives
