English term or phrase:travelling matte
Generally a matte is a device used for obscuring or diminishing portions of the camera view. They are particularly useful in special effects. When the lens is actually blocked out by a "stationary" matte, that portion of the film remains unexposed. The unexposed film can then be treated by a matte artist or it can be exposed for the first time -- as it passes through the camera once again -- to objects, performers, effects loops, miniatures, paintings, scenery, superimpositions, et cetera. Backgrounds, foregrounds and extensions of present sets can be aritificially or effectually added through a device called the "matte box" which is "pre-pared" with special effects. "Artists" often draw or paint the desired scenery upon the assigned surface whether glass or metal. A matte "shot" occurs when the camera combines two or more of these effects through photography and the "traveling matte" combines performers and motion. (See "blue screen processing".)
