The visual effects process begins with a number of ingredients. The first ingredient in the mix is the film or video that was shot. This usually consists of a series of still images (as opposed to movie formats like quicktime) and are referred to as 'plates' (as in film plates). These usually consist of a sequence of digital files that are the digital scans of the original film that was shot. These are the source images and, in theory, the only thing they are missing are the visual effects - http://www.hello-napalm.com/tuts/vfxintro.html
